file_get_contents() and file_get_contents_with_max_length() return
Vec<u8> instead of a from_utf8_lossy'd String.
Call sites whose consumer takes a &str still convert lossily and are
marked TODO(bytes).
file_get_contents_with_max_length() now reads at most the requested
number of bytes instead of the whole file.

PackageInterface::getRequires() and friends return the array of Link objects;
in PHP that is a copy-on-write array of object references, so a caller pays
nothing to look at it. The port returned IndexMap<String, Link> by value, so
every call deep-cloned the whole map, keys and constraints included. Pool
building calls these accessors once per package per candidate, which put
IndexMap::clone at 13.5% of `require laravel/laravel`.
Store the maps as Rc<IndexMap<String, Link>> and return a handle. Callers that
mutate the map clone it explicitly at the point of mutation, matching where PHP
would separate the array.

The capture groups were discarded at 162 of the preg_match call sites,
which only tested the Option. They now call preg_is_match, which lets the
regex engine skip capture tracking.

Every call site but one passed offset 0. The remaining one, the UTF-8
chunking loop in Application, slices the subject instead: its pattern has
no anchor or lookaround, so matching a suffix is equivalent to starting
the search at that offset.

Preg had shed everything it owned: after the last few rounds its methods
were one-line forwards to the shim's preg_*(), differing only in a
default argument or a wrapper the caller unwrapped anyway. The 460 call
sites now name the shim function, and shirabe-pcre is gone from the
workspace along with its LICENSE entry.
The forwards expand as they read: isMatch becomes
preg_match2(.., 0).is_some() (is_none() where PHP negates it), isMatch3
and match3 drop the .is_some(), matchAll counts through
preg_match_all2(..).occurrence_count(), and replace4/replace5 spell out
the limit and count arguments preg_replace2 takes. Callbacks are the one
place the shapes differ: preg_replace_callback carries an error out of
the callback, so the fourteen infallible closures wrap their result in
Ok() and expect() it back.
Config::process() is the fifteenth, and it drops the `error` cell it
captured to smuggle a failure past a closure that could only return a
String. The `?` in the closure now carries it, which is what the PHP
does -- a throw from the callback leaves preg_replace_callback at the
failing match rather than running the remaining replacements and
reporting the last error.
The module doc that explained why composer/pcre's exceptions and
*StrictGroups() variants have no counterpart moves to the shim's preg
module, where the functions it describes live.

PregMatches keyed both forms of a capture group through CaptureKey, so
every read built one: a usize wrapped in an enum, or worse, a String
allocated to name a group that regex::Captures can look up from a &str.
It now mirrors regex::Captures instead -- get() takes the group number,
name() the group name -- and the enum drops out of the type entirely.
That is 285 call sites across 59 files, and the named ones carry most of
the win: `matches.get(&CaptureKey::ByName("host".to_string()))` reads as
`matches.name("host")`. ProcessExecutor loses a `user_key` binding that
existed only to build the key once.
CaptureKey stays as the key type of PregMatchesAll and
PregMatchesAllWithOffsets, where numbered and named entries share one
IndexMap and a key type is the point. Five files still name it.
Also retargets the two preg_match_all comments that described the
occurrence count through `matches[&CaptureKey::ByIndex(0)].len()`, an
Index impl these types no longer carry.

Preg::match4 and Preg::replace_callback gave callers a
PregMatchedGroups: an IndexMap rebuilt from the match with an owned
String per group, plus a second String for a named group's name key.
That is the copy PregMatches shed when it started wrapping
regex::Captures, reinstated one layer up -- and nearly every regex call
in the tree goes through Preg rather than the shim's preg_* directly, so
almost nothing saw the borrow.
PregMatchedGroups existed only to drop the null (unmatched) groups the
old PregMatches held as Option<String> values. PregMatches::get reports
a non-participating group as None on its own, so the two read alike and
the type collapses into it. Call sites still reach groups through
get(&CaptureKey::ByIndex(N)); what changes is that the value arrives as
a &str borrowed from the subject, which the signatures now carry as a
lifetime.
Three places needed the borrow reckoned with rather than a mechanical
rewrite: PhpFileCleaner::clean and Problem::get_messages read their
groups out before mutating what the match borrows, and
Git::get_authentication_failure names the lifetime of its url argument,
which the result borrows instead of self.

`Composer\Pcre\Preg` fills `$matches` through a by-ref parameter, and the
port mirrored that with a `&mut` (or `Option<&mut>`) out-param plus a
bool or count return. Callers had to declare an empty map one line ahead
of the call, and the type never said the map is only meaningful when the
call matched. Return the matches instead:
- match3/match4/is_match3/is_match4 -> Option<PregMatchedGroups>
- is_match_named -> Option<PregNamedGroups>
- match_all2/is_match_all -> PregMatchesAll
- is_match_all_with_offsets3 -> PregMatchesAllWithOffsets
Nothing is lost: the bool is `Option::is_some()`, and the occurrence
count is the length of any one column of a PREG_PATTERN_ORDER map, now
spelled `PregMatchesAll::occurrence_count()`. is_match() still answers
the bool question directly for callers that want no groups.

The five IndexMap shapes that the preg_* functions and Preg fill in are
now distinct types generated by preg_match_map!, so a matches map no
longer interchanges with any other map of the same key and value type.
Index<usize> is kept alongside Index<&Q> because call sites such as
config_command and event_dispatcher reach for a group by its position in
the map rather than by its capture key.

AutoloadGenerator.php builds the target-dir pattern by quoting the path
with a <dirsep> marker in place of the separators, then replacing the
quoted marker with [\\/]. The port kept that shape, but preg_quote()
here deliberately leaves < and > alone so the regex crate does not read
\< as a word boundary, so the replacement never matched and the pattern
came out as the literal {^Main<dirsep>Foo<dirsep>}.
A root package's target-dir was therefore never stripped from files,
classmap or exclude-from-classmap, and dumping one failed outright.
Split on the separators and quote each segment instead, so the marker
never passes through preg_quote() at all.

Porting mapped every PHP `protected` member onto `pub(crate)`, which is
wider than nearly all of them need. Each item demoted here is reached
only from the module that defines it, so the crate-wide visibility
conveyed nothing.
Every `pub(crate)` that survives has at least one reader in another
module of the same crate.

The constant was None and defined("HHVM_VERSION") reports it undefined, so
every branch guarded by it was dead: shirabe is a Rust binary and never runs
on HHVM. HhvmDetector keeps probing for an `hhvm` binary in PATH, which is
what actually produces the hhvm platform package.
Two of the dropped branches ask about the PHP runtime that consumes the
result rather than about shirabe itself -- the class loader's Hack file
lookup and the class map parser's enum scanning -- so both get a
TODO(php-runtime) marker.

str_contains(), str_starts_with() and str_ends_with() were thin wrappers
over the str methods of the same semantics. Call sites now use
contains()/starts_with()/ends_with() directly.

ClassLoader's PSR-0 include_path lookup went through a shim stub that could
only have answered with an invented include_path: the setting is PHP runtime
state, and the one thing that turns useIncludePath on is the generated
autoload_real.php, whose set_include_path() call runs inside the worker.
Ask the worker instead, so the search sees the same path list as the process
that ends up including the resolved file.

The real port lives in shirabe-php-rpc as __shirabe_composer_require(),
which runs inside the PHP worker where $GLOBALS and `require` exist.
Record that pointer in the module doc instead of keeping a stub that
can never be implemented on the Rust side.

shirabe-symfony-console crate
Move `Symfony\Component\Console` out of shirabe-external-packages and
into its own crate, so the path is
`shirabe_symfony_console::application::Application` instead of
`shirabe_external_packages::symfony::console::application::Application`.
The `delegate_to_inner!` and `delegate_command_trait_impls_to_inner!`
macros move with it.

Concatenating a directory, MAIN_SEPARATOR and a component reimplements
what Path::join already does. Joining directly also drops the separator
from the intermediate values it used to be baked into, such as
ClassLoader's $pathEnd.

The shim's DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR was hardcoded to "/", so every ported
`'\\' === DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR` check compared against a constant that
does not track the target platform. std::path::MAIN_SEPARATOR and
MAIN_SEPARATOR_STR carry the same meaning as PHP's constant and resolve
per platform, so the Windows branches are selected on Windows targets.

Ported exceptions were flat structs reached with `downcast_ref`, so
Composer's `catch (\RuntimeException $e)` only matched the exact leaf
type and `get_class($e)` had nothing to report. Each exception now
embeds an instance of the class it extends and travels inside an
`AnyThrowable`; `Catch::catch`/`catch_mut` walk that chain, and
`PhpClass::php_class_name` yields the PHP FQCN.
Dropping the `std::error::Error` impls from the exception types leaves
`AnyThrowable` as the only route into an `anyhow::Error`, so the walk
cannot be bypassed. A `no_exception_downcast` linter catches the
`downcast::<X>()` calls that would now silently answer `None`.
Three sites change behavior as a result: the `TransportException`
exit-code override reaches `MaxFileSizeExceededException`, the
`catch (\LogicException)` in findSimilar() reaches its subclasses, and
rendered exception titles carry the real class name rather than a
guess. `get_class_err()` is no longer a `todo!()`, which re-enables
FilesystemRepositoryTest::testCorruptedRepositoryFile.

AutoloadGenerator::dump dispatches PRE_AUTOLOAD_DUMP / POST_AUTOLOAD_DUMP, and
EventDispatcher::make_autoloader answers those by walking back into the Composer
graph -- the local repository, the installation manager, and the generator
itself. Installer::run held mutable borrows of all three across the dump call,
so any plugin subscribing to either event panicked with "RefCell already
borrowed" before its listener ran.
dump() and build_package_map() now take the local repository, the installation
manager and the locker as shared handles instead of &mut dyn, and the borrow is
taken where it is used.
The generator itself is re-entered, not just borrowed twice: PHP listeners reach
it through Composer::getAutoloadGenerator() and call setDevMode() while dump()
is running, and make_autoloader asks the same object for a package map. That is
not expressible behind &mut self, so the mutable state moves into Cell/RefCell
fields and the whole AutoloadGeneratorInterface takes &self.

The generated-file templates are heredocs in Composer's
AutoloadGenerator. Writing them as raw string literals keeps the emitted
PHP laid out the way it is written out, matching the blocks in
getAutoloadRealFile and getStaticFile that already use them.

The docblock allows string|iterable<SplFileInfo>, but every call site in
Composer passes a string, so the iterable branch was only a todo!().
Taking &str drops it together with the InvalidArgumentException that the
type now rules out.

The ported docblocks copied @param and @return straight from the PHP
source. When such a tag carries nothing but a type and an argument name,
the Rust signature already states it, so the line is noise. Tags whose
text adds prose beyond the type are kept.

The shim's filesystem entry points took `&str` even though each one resolves
to a local path through `std::fs` or a syscall, so callers holding a `PathBuf`
had to stringify it at the call site. They now take `impl AsRef<Path>`, the
form `file_exists`, `is_dir`, `unlink` and the rest of the already-converted
set use.
`Phar`, `PharData` and `ZipArchive` keep their archive path as a `PathBuf`.
`PharData::compress` names the compressed sibling by appending the suffix to
the file name rather than formatting the path into a `String`.
Arguments PHP resolves through a stream wrapper (`fopen`, `file_put_contents`,
`include`) still take `&str`, as do the byte-string operations (`dirname`,
`basename`, `pathinfo`) and archive-internal entry names, which are `/`-joined
logical names rather than OS paths.

Three fixes for the ComposerRepository/FilesystemRepository/PlatformRepository
hazards where inner-composition delegation skipped PHP's late-bound virtual
dispatch:
- ComposerRepository::has_package now builds its packageMap through the
late-bound getPackages() equivalent, so lazy-providers repos surface the
LogicException and available-packages repos load their package list, as in
PHP, instead of silently answering false from the raw array.
- RepositoryInterface::get_repo_name returns anyhow::Result<String>: PHP's
getRepoName() counts through the late-bound initialize(), which is fallible
in file-reading subclasses. FilesystemRepository and PackageRepository now
run that initialization instead of freezing the inner array repository to an
empty state (which also made a later write() truncate installed.json).
Supporting changes keep the initialization chain callable from &self:
JsonFile::read takes &self (indent moved into a RefCell), FilesystemRepository
dev_mode became a Cell, and WritableArrayRepository dev_package_names a
RefCell.
- PlatformRepository::new routes constructor packages through its own
add_package so the override handling and full platform initialization run
as they do via PHP's parent constructor; the inner find_package/add_package
delegations inside add_package (and ComposerRepository::add_package) gained
the same is_initialized guard, since the constructor path would otherwise
freeze the repository.

regex::Regex::clone() does not share the underlying meta engine's
search-cache pool, so every fresh clone pays a ~10us warmup cost on
its first use. Two changes together eliminate this across nearly all
preg_* call sites:
- A php_regex! macro resolves PHP-style patterns to a per-call-site
&'static regex::Regex (via regex-macro's LazyLock), applied at the
majority of call sites throughout the codebase.
- Call sites still passing dynamic pattern strings go through
PATTERN_CACHE, which now stores Arc<(Regex, bool)> and hands out
Arc::clone()s instead of cloning the Regex itself.
PregPattern::resolve() returns a ResolvedPattern enum (Arc or
'static reference) rather than an owned Regex, so neither path ever
clones the Regex proper.

parse_autoloads_type stores exclude-from-classmap and classmap as
PhpMixed::Array (string-keyed), but dump()/create_loader() read them
with as_list(), which only matches PhpMixed::List and thus always
returned None. exclude-from-classmap patterns declared by vendor
packages (e.g. symfony/service-contracts' /Test/) were consequently
never excluded from the generated classmap. Switched both call sites
to as_array()/.values(), matching the already-correct usage earlier in
the same function.

PHP heredocs drop the newline before the closing marker, so a two-blank-line
fragment must port to "\n\n", not "\n\n\n", and the static initializer needs a
"\n" after the $initializer placeholder. This makes autoload_real.php and
autoload_static.php byte-identical to Composer's output. Rewrite the templates
as raw strings mirroring the PHP heredocs.

Composer/PartialComposer exposed its RepositoryManager, InstallationManager,
EventDispatcher, Locker, DownloadManager, AutoloadGenerator and ArchiveManager
as concrete types, but Composer's public setters (setDownloadManager() etc.)
let plugins swap in subclasses. Introduce a *Interface trait per manager and
store each as Rc<RefCell<dyn ...Interface>> so a replacement is honored.
Only Composer's slots and the sinks fed from its accessors become trait
objects; managers injected concretely at construction keep their concrete
references, matching PHP semantics. Fluent setters on the affected classes now
return () and Locker::update_hash is de-generified to a boxed FnOnce so the
traits stay object-safe.

git_driver (6), archive_manager (3), and a bump command test. Fix the
ApplicationTester output-capture root cause (php://memory streams must be
readable regardless of fopen mode). Implement posix_getuid/geteuid, the PCRE
'A' anchored modifier, php_strip_whitespace, stream_get_wrappers, is_callable
scalars; fix preg_quote angle-bracket escaping and class-map parser regexes.

Rework the environment shim around getenv/putenv on the real environment
and $_ENV/$_SERVER as startup snapshots, all over OsString. Migrate every
caller off the old server()/server_argv() helpers and force the snapshots
in main() before any putenv() runs. Document the porting rules in
docs/dev/env-vars-porting.md.

apcu_fetch/apcu_add only ran when apcuPrefix was non-null, but
Composer never calls setApcuPrefix on the loaders it instantiates
itself; the prefix is only emitted into the generated target-project
autoload_real.php. So the cache branches were unreachable in Shirabe's
execution paths. Remove the apcu shim and the now-dead lookups.

Convert every sprintf() call with a compile-time literal format string to
format!, implementing Display for PhpMixed (delegating to php_to_string) so
PhpMixed values render with PHP string semantics through {}. Also merge the
format!-wrapped and conditional-literal dynamic sites into single format!
calls. Genuinely runtime format strings (table styles, configurable error
messages, command synopsis, progress-bar modifiers, regex-built messages)
still go through sprintf.

Resolve category K (array_* functions, integer keys, nested mutation,
sorting). Add shim variants (uasort over Vec<T>, uasort_map for IndexMap)
and delegate to existing typed variants (strtr_array, array_merge_map,
array_search_in_vec). Implement PHP array semantics directly where the
shape is fixed: canonical integer-key coercion (is_php_integer_key,
shared by config and FilesystemRepository::dumpToPhpCode), strict
array_search via trait-object pointer identity, array_reverse/array_chunk
preserve_keys loops, and the installed.php nested version mutations via
auto-vivify helpers.
Resolving the array_merge in UpdateCommand unmasked latent borrow bugs in
execute's tail (Rc input/output moved by value); fixed with .clone() to
match PHP reference sharing, and resolved the tightly-coupled Intervals
constraint check.
composerRequire reclassified to phase-c: it depends on the $GLOBALS
superglobal and PHP's require include mechanism, neither portable.

Implement the foundational PhpMixed conversion infrastructure
(From<bool|i64|f64|String>, order-sensitive PartialEq matching PHP ===)
and resolve the category-G phase-b TODOs that depend on it:
- Fix VCS driver cache paths that discarded parsed JSON or diverged on
null caches (svn/forgejo/gitlab/git-bitbucket/github).
- Wire up real conversions previously stubbed or dropped: suggests
platform config, audit ignore-severities, composer_repository search
and ProviderInfo, class_loader prefix/classmap merges, locker lock
diff comparison, advisory JSON serialization, SPDX license fields.
- Make GenericRule take a typed ReasonData; populate RULE_ROOT_REQUIRE
with the constraint and convert PhpMixed at the call sites.

- VcsRepository: dispatch drivers through a VcsDriverKind enum
(instantiate/supports/php_class_name) and add constructors to the
concrete VCS drivers
- repository downcasts via RepositoryInterfaceHandle::downcast_rc and
as_any (init/show commands, vcs ValidatingArrayLoader)
- BaseCommand::is_self_update_command override replaces an instanceof
- Factory::create narrows PartialComposer to ComposerHandle via as_full
- InstalledVersions gains set_self_dir/set_installed_is_local_dir,
replacing Reflection-based static property mutation
- ClassLoader::as_array_iter ports the PHP (array) cast
- drop the unnecessary __FILE__ phar branch in self-update
application get_class(command) reclassified TODO(plugin); buffer_io
StreamableInputInterface downcast and the ValidatingArrayLoader trait
redesign left as tracked TODOs.
