Preg::match4 and Preg::replace_callback gave callers a
PregMatchedGroups: an IndexMap rebuilt from the match with an owned
String per group, plus a second String for a named group's name key.
That is the copy PregMatches shed when it started wrapping
regex::Captures, reinstated one layer up -- and nearly every regex call
in the tree goes through Preg rather than the shim's preg_* directly, so
almost nothing saw the borrow.
PregMatchedGroups existed only to drop the null (unmatched) groups the
old PregMatches held as Option<String> values. PregMatches::get reports
a non-participating group as None on its own, so the two read alike and
the type collapses into it. Call sites still reach groups through
get(&CaptureKey::ByIndex(N)); what changes is that the value arrives as
a &str borrowed from the subject, which the signatures now carry as a
lifetime.
Three places needed the borrow reckoned with rather than a mechanical
rewrite: PhpFileCleaner::clean and Problem::get_messages read their
groups out before mutating what the match borrows, and
Git::get_authentication_failure names the lifetime of its url argument,
which the result borrows instead of self.

`Composer\Pcre\Preg` fills `$matches` through a by-ref parameter, and the
port mirrored that with a `&mut` (or `Option<&mut>`) out-param plus a
bool or count return. Callers had to declare an empty map one line ahead
of the call, and the type never said the map is only meaningful when the
call matched. Return the matches instead:
- match3/match4/is_match3/is_match4 -> Option<PregMatchedGroups>
- is_match_named -> Option<PregNamedGroups>
- match_all2/is_match_all -> PregMatchesAll
- is_match_all_with_offsets3 -> PregMatchesAllWithOffsets
Nothing is lost: the bool is `Option::is_some()`, and the occurrence
count is the length of any one column of a PREG_PATTERN_ORDER map, now
spelled `PregMatchesAll::occurrence_count()`. is_match() still answers
the bool question directly for callers that want no groups.

The five IndexMap shapes that the preg_* functions and Preg fill in are
now distinct types generated by preg_match_map!, so a matches map no
longer interchanges with any other map of the same key and value type.
Index<usize> is kept alongside Index<&Q> because call sites such as
config_command and event_dispatcher reach for a group by its position in
the map rather than by its capture key.

preg_split2()'s limit was always -1 and its flags were always either 0 or
PREG_SPLIT_DELIM_CAPTURE alone, so both arguments are gone: the shim now
exposes preg_split() and preg_split_delim_capture() over a shared
preg_split_impl(). That leaves Preg::split()/split4() as bare
pass-throughs, so callers use the shim functions directly and the wrappers
are dropped along with the now-unreferenced PREG_SPLIT_* constants.

Every caller of Preg::match_all3()/is_match_all3() passed Some(&mut _),
so the argument is now a plain &mut. Preg::match_all() keeps the
no-captures form with a local throwaway map, and the arity suffixes are
renumbered accordingly (match_all2(), is_match_all()).

PHP's Preg::matchAll() and matchAllWithOffsets() always set
PREG_UNMATCHED_AS_NULL, so a non-participating group is `null` and its
offset is -1. The Rust wrappers collapsed those to "" and 0, so callers
could not tell a group that did not participate from one that matched an
empty string at offset 0, and the offset value matched no PHP mode at
all.
Hand the shim's representation through unchanged and let each caller
mirror what the PHP original does with it: `isset()` and `(string)`
casts stay lenient, while `assert(is_string(...))` and the
*StrictGroups() variants become `expect()`.

Porting mapped every PHP `protected` member onto `pub(crate)`, which is
wider than nearly all of them need. Each item demoted here is reached
only from the module that defines it, so the crate-wide visibility
conveyed nothing.
Every `pub(crate)` that survives has at least one reader in another
module of the same crate.

Ported exceptions were flat structs reached with `downcast_ref`, so
Composer's `catch (\RuntimeException $e)` only matched the exact leaf
type and `get_class($e)` had nothing to report. Each exception now
embeds an instance of the class it extends and travels inside an
`AnyThrowable`; `Catch::catch`/`catch_mut` walk that chain, and
`PhpClass::php_class_name` yields the PHP FQCN.
Dropping the `std::error::Error` impls from the exception types leaves
`AnyThrowable` as the only route into an `anyhow::Error`, so the walk
cannot be bypassed. A `no_exception_downcast` linter catches the
`downcast::<X>()` calls that would now silently answer `None`.
Three sites change behavior as a result: the `TransportException`
exit-code override reaches `MaxFileSizeExceededException`, the
`catch (\LogicException)` in findSimilar() reaches its subclasses, and
rendered exception titles carry the real class name rather than a
guess. `get_class_err()` is no longer a `todo!()`, which re-enables
FilesystemRepositoryTest::testCorruptedRepositoryFile.

PHP's version_compare takes its operator as a string, so the shim's port
did too, and Constraint carried two families of operator constants plus
translation tables to convert between the string form and its own int
codes. Five copies of those tables had accumulated across Constraint,
CompilingMatcher and the plugin value bridge.
version_compare now takes a CmpOp, which makes an invalid operator
unrepresentable and removes the tables' reason to exist. Constraint
stores a CmpOp and keeps only the string parsing its constructor needs;
getOperator, compile and CompilingMatcher::match speak CmpOp as well.
PHP's OP_* numbering stays observable: a plugin reads the raw integer off
the Constraint object over RPC, so get_operator_constant and its new
inverse hold that 0..5 mapping.

getDownloaderForPackage reports get_class($downloader) when the resolved
downloader's installation source does not match. Rust has no runtime class
name, so the message was built from a shim stub that panicked instead —
the error could never be returned.
DownloaderInterface now requires PhpClass, the trait already used for the
same purpose on Command, and each downloader states the name PHP reports.
That leaves get_class_obj without callers, so it is gone.

The ported docblocks copied @param and @return straight from the PHP
source. When such a tag carries nothing but a type and an argument name,
the Rust signature already states it, so the line is noise. Tags whose
text adds prose beyond the type are kept.

IOInterface::ask/select now return anyhow::Result<PhpMixed>, and
ConsoleIO::ask_question forwards QuestionHelper errors (validator
failures, MissingInputException) instead of collapsing them with
.expect(). In PHP these exceptions propagate from QuestionHelper
through ConsoleIO to the caller, so callers such as UpdateCommand's
interactive package selection must be able to observe them; the
MissingInputException is wrapped with its concrete type preserved so
Application's ExceptionInterface downcast keeps working. All call
sites now propagate with `?` (Perforce::query_p4_user becomes
Result-returning: PHP declares it void but exceptions still escape),
and the previously ignored
test_interactive_mode_throws_if_no_package_entered passes.
ask_confirmation/ask_and_hide_answer still collapse errors; extending
propagation to them is left as TODO(phase-c) pending a decision.

Several call sites coerced PhpMixed to bool via `.as_bool()` (which
only matches a literal Bool variant) where the corresponding PHP code
does a plain `(bool)` cast or truthy check (isset()/array_key_exists()
+ implicit bool conversion). This silently dropped truthy non-bool
values (e.g. String("true"), String("1"), Int(1)) to their unwrap_or
default instead of PHP's actual truthy result. Switched these sites to
PhpMixed::to_bool(), which implements PHP's full truthy-cast rules.

Concurrent package operations call into the same downloader instances
through Rc<RefCell<dyn DownloaderInterface>>; with &mut self methods
every call holds a RefMut across its awaits, which panics with
'already mutably borrowed' the moment two operations overlap. This is
groundwork for fanning out InstallationManager's download/install
loops (same rework HttpDownloader/CurlDownloader already got).
- DownloaderInterface/ChangeReportInterface/ArchiveDownloader/
VcsDownloader methods now take &self; as_change_report_interface
returns &dyn instead of &mut dyn.
- Implementors move their genuinely mutable state behind cells:
FileDownloader.additional_cleanup_paths, the archive downloaders'
cleanup_executed, ZipDownloader.zip_archive_object,
VcsDownloaderBase.has_cleaned_changes, GitDownloader's stash/discard/
cache maps and GitUtil, SvnDownloader.cache_credentials,
PerforceDownloader.perforce. FileDownloader.io gains a RefCell layer
so get_local_changes can keep PHP's NullIO swap under &self.
- ProcessExecutor::execute_async now returns a future that captures
everything up front instead of borrowing the executor, and call
sites build the future before awaiting, so no borrow on the shared
executor is held while a subprocess runs.
- Filesystem::remove_directory_async becomes remove_directory_async_via
taking the Rc handle: the Filesystem is only borrowed for the sync
head/tail, never across the rm subprocess await (sync borrow_mut
users like rename/ensure_directory_exists would otherwise collide).
- DownloadManager async call sites hold shared borrows only.

regex::Regex::clone() does not share the underlying meta engine's
search-cache pool, so every fresh clone pays a ~10us warmup cost on
its first use. Two changes together eliminate this across nearly all
preg_* call sites:
- A php_regex! macro resolves PHP-style patterns to a per-call-site
&'static regex::Regex (via regex-macro's LazyLock), applied at the
majority of call sites throughout the codebase.
- Call sites still passing dynamic pattern strings go through
PATTERN_CACHE, which now stores Arc<(Regex, bool)> and hands out
Arc::clone()s instead of cloning the Regex itself.
PregPattern::resolve() returns a ResolvedPattern enum (Arc or
'static reference) rather than an owned Regex, so neither path ever
clones the Regex proper.

Model Git::runCommand's mixed $commandOutput parameter with the
RunCommandOutput trait (one impl per PHP mode: discard, by-ref capture,
callable handler), mirroring ProcessExecutor's IntoExecOutput. This moves
the is_callable($commandOutput) value-inspection into the type system and
drops the dependency on the shim's incomplete is_callable.

Rust's type system already distinguishes participating from

methods add no safety here. Remove them and switch callers to the
plain variants.

Convert every sprintf() call with a compile-time literal format string to
format!, implementing Display for PhpMixed (delegating to php_to_string) so
PhpMixed values render with PHP string semantics through {}. Also merge the
format!-wrapped and conditional-literal dynamic sites into single format!
calls. Genuinely runtime format strings (table styles, configurable error
messages, command synopsis, progress-bar modifiers, regex-built messages)
still go through sprintf.

PHP mutator methods that the Phase B port could not call because only
&self / &dyn / Rc access was available. Resolved by the interior-mutation
APIs that already exist: handle &self setters (set_dist/source_reference,
set_requires/dev/references/stability_flags), Rc<RefCell<dyn InputInterface>>
.borrow_mut(), and get_installation_manager().borrow_mut() (build_package_map
passes an empty/canonical package list per upstream). composer.get_package()
returns &RootPackageInterfaceHandle, so the "&dyn" Phase B note was wrong.
factory's set_config_source/set_auth_config_source were already live code;
their stale TODOs are removed.

The VcsDownloaderBase::clean_changes stub returned Ok(None), silently
swallowing the abort that PHP's parent::cleanChanges() raises when the
working copy has uncommitted changes. Drop the stub and give Git/Svn a
private fail_on_local_changes helper that performs the getLocalChanges
check and throws, matching the default VcsDownloader::clean_changes().

PHP's viewDiff returns void but throws RuntimeException when git diff

Share downloaders as Rc<RefCell<dyn DownloaderInterface>> in
DownloadManager and make DownloaderInterface/VcsDownloader take
&mut self, matching PHP's mutable-by-reference downloader objects.
This lets Git/Svn/Hg/Fossil/Perforce implement VcsDownloader and route
download/install/update/prepare/cleanup through the trait instead of
todo!(), and wires the as_* downcast hooks end-to-end.
ChangeReportInterface::get_local_changes becomes &mut self since
FileDownloader downloads to a compare dir; get_commit_logs/reapply_changes
gain &mut self / Result to match the concrete implementations.

Package/CompletePackage/RootPackage
Fill the trait-impl todo!() across the package accessor layer so loaded
packages are actually usable (the ArrayLoader::load path depends on it):
- Package: implement BasePackage/PackageInterface from struct fields and
existing inherent methods; Display via get_unique_name.
- CompletePackage: delegate PackageInterface to inner Package.
- RootPackage: delegate CompletePackageInterface/PackageInterface to inner
CompletePackage; RootPackageInterface link setters delegate to Package.
Correct three unfaithful trait signatures found during implementation:
- get_target_dir returns Option<String> (PHP computes a normalized value;
a borrow cannot represent it, and AliasPackage could not implement &str
across its aliasOf handle).
- RootPackageInterface link setters take IndexMap<String, Link>, matching
Package and the real ArrayLoader caller (PHP RootPackage inherits
Package::setRequires; the Link[] docblock was imprecise).
- get_full_pretty_version takes a DisplayMode enum instead of a raw i64;
the match is now exhaustive, so it returns String without an error path.
Move mirror conversion to the boundaries: PackageInterface mirror methods
use Vec<Mirror> (the typed form, matching the inherent methods), with
array<->Mirror conversion done by the producer (ComposerRepository) and
consumer (ArrayDumper).

RuntimeException
Match PHP GitDownloader::getUnpushedChanges, which returns ?string while
throwing \RuntimeException on git command failure. Change the signature to
Result<Option<String>> and replace the three panic\!() sites with
Err(RuntimeException), mirroring the get_local_changes port. Thread ? through
the clean_changes and StatusCommand call sites.

Git/Svn/Hg/Fossil/Perforce now implement ChangeReportInterface and
VcsCapableDownloaderInterface and override the as_* downcasts, so PHP-style
instanceof checks on a DownloaderInterface resolve to these sub-interfaces.
get_local_changes lives directly in the ChangeReportInterface impl
(returning anyhow::Result; GitDownloader now surfaces a RuntimeException
instead of panicking on a failed git status). get_vcs_reference is shared
via a new VcsDownloaderBase helper that each downloader delegates to.

Override DownloaderInterface's as_change_report_interface /
as_vcs_capable_downloader_interface / as_dvcs_downloader_interface so
PHP-style instanceof checks resolve to the concrete sub-interface:
FileDownloader and the six archive downloaders (Zip/Tar/Gzip/Xz/Rar/Phar)
plus PathDownloader gain ChangeReportInterface (archives/path delegate to
the inner FileDownloader), PathDownloader exposes VcsCapableDownloaderInterface,
and GitDownloader exposes DvcsDownloaderInterface.
The default None impls remain correct for downloaders that do not
implement a given sub-interface, so their stale TODO markers are dropped.
VCS downloaders' ChangeReport/VcsCapable conformance follows separately.

Mechanically convert promise-returning function bodies to async/await:
resolve() returns the value directly, forwarding calls get .await, and
simple .then chains become await sequences. Also collapse the installer
double-Option (Result<Option<Option<PhpMixed>>> -> Result<Option<PhpMixed>>).
Hard spots that depend on the Loop::wait / job-machine boundary
(accept/reject orchestration, closures capturing &mut self, batch waits)
are left intact and marked with TODO(phase-c-promise) for manual porting.
The crate does not compile yet; traits still need #[async_trait].

Implement BaseCommand trait and other abstract class traits across
all command, downloader, io, package, and VCS driver types. Also
fix trait method signatures for composer_mut and io_mut to return
mutable references to Option rather than Option of mutable references.
