A response is built for one request and the graph never retains it, so there
is no entity for a handle to point at. The child holds a real instance
instead, revived from the object record the wire carries, and collect() frees
the copy each world holds — which is what that method is for. The
value-object rule rejects the class only because collect() assigns to $this,
so the category comes from an overrides.list entry.
HttpDownloader::get() and copy() answer with one.
Two gaps stay: decodeJson() reaches Composer\Json\JsonFile, which a guard
shadows, and Composer answers a curl request with the CurlResponse subclass
where this port flattens the value into a Response.

tokio's File returns from write_all once the blocking write is queued, so
the tail of the response body was still in flight when the download future
resolved. The caller then renamed the file, stat'd it and copied it into
the cache, so a package could land in the file cache truncated. The first
run still extracted the complete file and only a later run reading that
cache entry failed with "End-of-central-directory signature not found".
Flushing also surfaces the last write's error, which used to be dropped.

CurlDownloader built a fresh reqwest Client, and with it a fresh
connection pool, on every construction. A `require` run constructs two:
RequireCommand::doUpdate discards the Composer instance that
BaseCommand::initialize built and rebuilds it against the rewritten
composer.json, so the second one opened a second TCP+TLS connection to
the same repository and paid another CA bundle parse.
Nothing in the constructor varies the Client -- `options` and
`disable_tls` are not applied to it -- so it can be shared. The cache is
keyed by tokio runtime rather than by process: a pooled connection is
driven by a task on the runtime that opened it and hangs if it is later
handed to another one, and `sync_executor::block_on` builds a disposable
runtime per call outside `main`.
Measured on `require monolog/monolog` in a git-managed project against a
warm cache: TLS connections to the repository drop from 2 to 1, taking
the run from 646 ms to 529 ms with the network and from 104 ms to 101 ms
offline.

The capture groups were discarded at 162 of the preg_match call sites,
which only tested the Option. They now call preg_is_match, which lets the
regex engine skip capture tracking.

Every call site but one passed offset 0. The remaining one, the UTF-8
chunking loop in Application, slices the subject instead: its pattern has
no anchor or lookaround, so matching a suffix is equivalent to starting
the search at that offset.

Preg had shed everything it owned: after the last few rounds its methods
were one-line forwards to the shim's preg_*(), differing only in a
default argument or a wrapper the caller unwrapped anyway. The 460 call
sites now name the shim function, and shirabe-pcre is gone from the
workspace along with its LICENSE entry.
The forwards expand as they read: isMatch becomes
preg_match2(.., 0).is_some() (is_none() where PHP negates it), isMatch3
and match3 drop the .is_some(), matchAll counts through
preg_match_all2(..).occurrence_count(), and replace4/replace5 spell out
the limit and count arguments preg_replace2 takes. Callbacks are the one
place the shapes differ: preg_replace_callback carries an error out of
the callback, so the fourteen infallible closures wrap their result in
Ok() and expect() it back.
Config::process() is the fifteenth, and it drops the `error` cell it
captured to smuggle a failure past a closure that could only return a
String. The `?` in the closure now carries it, which is what the PHP
does -- a throw from the callback leaves preg_replace_callback at the
failing match rather than running the remaining replacements and
reporting the last error.
The module doc that explained why composer/pcre's exceptions and
*StrictGroups() variants have no counterpart moves to the shim's preg
module, where the functions it describes live.

PregMatches keyed both forms of a capture group through CaptureKey, so
every read built one: a usize wrapped in an enum, or worse, a String
allocated to name a group that regex::Captures can look up from a &str.
It now mirrors regex::Captures instead -- get() takes the group number,
name() the group name -- and the enum drops out of the type entirely.
That is 285 call sites across 59 files, and the named ones carry most of
the win: `matches.get(&CaptureKey::ByName("host".to_string()))` reads as
`matches.name("host")`. ProcessExecutor loses a `user_key` binding that
existed only to build the key once.
CaptureKey stays as the key type of PregMatchesAll and
PregMatchesAllWithOffsets, where numbered and named entries share one
IndexMap and a key type is the point. Five files still name it.
Also retargets the two preg_match_all comments that described the
occurrence count through `matches[&CaptureKey::ByIndex(0)].len()`, an
Index impl these types no longer carry.

Preg::match4 and Preg::replace_callback gave callers a
PregMatchedGroups: an IndexMap rebuilt from the match with an owned
String per group, plus a second String for a named group's name key.
That is the copy PregMatches shed when it started wrapping
regex::Captures, reinstated one layer up -- and nearly every regex call
in the tree goes through Preg rather than the shim's preg_* directly, so
almost nothing saw the borrow.
PregMatchedGroups existed only to drop the null (unmatched) groups the
old PregMatches held as Option<String> values. PregMatches::get reports
a non-participating group as None on its own, so the two read alike and
the type collapses into it. Call sites still reach groups through
get(&CaptureKey::ByIndex(N)); what changes is that the value arrives as
a &str borrowed from the subject, which the signatures now carry as a
lifetime.
Three places needed the borrow reckoned with rather than a mechanical
rewrite: PhpFileCleaner::clean and Problem::get_messages read their
groups out before mutating what the match borrows, and
Git::get_authentication_failure names the lifetime of its url argument,
which the result borrows instead of self.

`Composer\Pcre\Preg` fills `$matches` through a by-ref parameter, and the
port mirrored that with a `&mut` (or `Option<&mut>`) out-param plus a
bool or count return. Callers had to declare an empty map one line ahead
of the call, and the type never said the map is only meaningful when the
call matched. Return the matches instead:
- match3/match4/is_match3/is_match4 -> Option<PregMatchedGroups>
- is_match_named -> Option<PregNamedGroups>
- match_all2/is_match_all -> PregMatchesAll
- is_match_all_with_offsets3 -> PregMatchesAllWithOffsets
Nothing is lost: the bool is `Option::is_some()`, and the occurrence
count is the length of any one column of a PREG_PATTERN_ORDER map, now
spelled `PregMatchesAll::occurrence_count()`. is_match() still answers
the bool question directly for callers that want no groups.

The five IndexMap shapes that the preg_* functions and Preg fill in are
now distinct types generated by preg_match_map!, so a matches map no
longer interchanges with any other map of the same key and value type.
Index<usize> is kept alongside Index<&Q> because call sites such as
config_command and event_dispatcher reach for a group by its position in
the map rather than by its capture key.

ProxyManager::initProxyData() reads $_SERVER[$name], a startup snapshot,
while the port read the live process environment. A putenv() issued
after startup changed the proxy the port picked but not the one PHP
would pick.

The assoc flag was always a literal at every call site, so the boolean
carried no information the function name could not. json_decode_assoc
and json_decode_obj make the resulting PhpMixed shape visible at the
call site.

parse_url now returns Option<UrlComponents> instead of a PhpMixed array,
and the component-selecting overload with the PHP_URL_* constants is gone:
callers read the field they want. Two call sites change behaviour as a
result, both towards PHP:
* CurlDownloader::handle_redirect tested scheme and host with is_null(), so
an unparsable Location header (PhpMixed::Bool(false)) counted as an
absolute URL. PHP's truthiness test sends it to the relative-path branch.
* Url::get_origin appended a literal port 0, which PHP treats as falsy and
leaves off.

Ported exceptions were flat structs reached with `downcast_ref`, so
Composer's `catch (\RuntimeException $e)` only matched the exact leaf
type and `get_class($e)` had nothing to report. Each exception now
embeds an instance of the class it extends and travels inside an
`AnyThrowable`; `Catch::catch`/`catch_mut` walk that chain, and
`PhpClass::php_class_name` yields the PHP FQCN.
Dropping the `std::error::Error` impls from the exception types leaves
`AnyThrowable` as the only route into an `anyhow::Error`, so the walk
cannot be bypassed. A `no_exception_downcast` linter catches the
`downcast::<X>()` calls that would now silently answer `None`.
Three sites change behavior as a result: the `TransportException`
exit-code override reaches `MaxFileSizeExceededException`, the
`catch (\LogicException)` in findSimilar() reaches its subclasses, and
rendered exception titles carry the real class name rather than a
guess. `get_class_err()` is no longer a `todo!()`, which re-enables
FilesystemRepositoryTest::testCorruptedRepositoryFile.

Call sites whose haystack was an inline array of literals (or a local
built solely to feed one) had to wrap both sides in PhpMixed just to
compare, allocating a String per element on every call. matches! does
the same test against the underlying &str/i64/Option directly, so the
PhpMixed round trip and its .to_string()/.clone()/.iter().map()
conversions are gone.
Sites whose haystack is a runtime value or a named constant array are
left on in_array_strict: inlining a named constant would duplicate its
contents at the call site.

The ported docblocks copied @param and @return straight from the PHP
source. When such a tag carries nothing but a type and an argument name,
the Rust signature already states it, so the line is noise. Tags whose
text adds prose beyond the type are kept.

The shim's filesystem entry points took `&str` even though each one resolves
to a local path through `std::fs` or a syscall, so callers holding a `PathBuf`
had to stringify it at the call site. They now take `impl AsRef<Path>`, the
form `file_exists`, `is_dir`, `unlink` and the rest of the already-converted
set use.
`Phar`, `PharData` and `ZipArchive` keep their archive path as a `PathBuf`.
`PharData::compress` names the compressed sibling by appending the suffix to
the file name rather than formatting the path into a `String`.
Arguments PHP resolves through a stream wrapper (`fopen`, `file_put_contents`,
`include`) still take `&str`, as do the byte-string operations (`dirname`,
`basename`, `pathinfo`) and archive-internal entry names, which are `/`-joined
logical names rather than OS paths.

regex::Regex::clone() does not share the underlying meta engine's
search-cache pool, so every fresh clone pays a ~10us warmup cost on
its first use. Two changes together eliminate this across nearly all
preg_* call sites:
- A php_regex! macro resolves PHP-style patterns to a per-call-site
&'static regex::Regex (via regex-macro's LazyLock), applied at the
majority of call sites throughout the codebase.
- Call sites still passing dynamic pattern strings go through
PATTERN_CACHE, which now stores Arc<(Regex, bool)> and hands out
Arc::clone()s instead of cloning the Regex itself.
PregPattern::resolve() returns a ResolvedPattern enum (Arc or
'static reference) rather than an owned Regex, so neither path ever
clones the Regex proper.

CurlDownloader::auth_helper was never cloned out to another owner, so
Rc<RefCell<AuthHelper>> only needed the RefCell for interior
mutability (all methods take &self). Likewise HttpDownloader::dispatch
cloned self.rfs into a local binding it only ever used synchronously
(copy/get_contents don't await), so the clone bought nothing.

PHP's handleRedirect() throws a bare TransportException when the
Location header is missing, and the caller's single catch block always
unlinks the `~` partial file via rejectJob(). The Rust decide() loop
splits each failure path into its own branch and had unlinked on every
other one, but missed this branch, leaking the partial file.

Freeform notes about intentionally-unported production behavior are
easy to miss on a read-through and impossible to grep for later.

Replaces the Job-table + tick()-driven polling loop with one async
download() that sends, decides (retry/redirect/fail/succeed via a new
decide() extracted from the former run_job), and loops until it
resolves — no more resolve/reject callbacks. The client switches from
reqwest::blocking::Client to the non-blocking reqwest::Client, with
body streaming now via tokio::fs.
Because real async I/O needs a live tokio reactor and none runs yet at
the process level (sync_executor::block_on is a no-reactor busy-spin
executor that only works when awaited futures resolve synchronously),
HttpDownloader::start_job drives CurlDownloader::download() through a
dedicated temporary current_thread Runtime (curl_runtime(), marked
TODO(phase-e)) instead. This keeps concurrency characteristics
unchanged for now — start_job still resolves one job at a time — real
parallel I/O lands once HttpDownloader/Loop are rearchitected on top of
FuturesUnordered.
count_active_jobs' curl.tick() polling and the Job.settled/curl_id
plumbing are removed as dead weight now that start_job settles curl
jobs synchronously, same as the rfs path already did.
abort_request is dropped: it had no caller (the PHP Promise-cancellation
flow it backs was never ported), and the job table it operated on no
longer exists.
Verified manually against real network I/O (sandbox disabled): `shirabe
show -a` (JSON metadata, in-memory body) and `shirabe create-project`
(actual dist zip download + extraction) both complete correctly with no
hang. Two unrelated pre-existing bugs surfaced during manual testing
(an event-dispatcher subscriber wiring gap during `require`, and a
RefCell reentrancy panic in `diagnose`) reproduce identically on the
pre-change code and are out of scope here.

CurlDownloader's download() is about to become an &self async method
as part of the HttpDownloader async rearchitecture; its auth_helper
field needs interior mutability ahead of that change. RemoteFilesystem
keeps its own AuthHelper as a plain field since it stays &mut self.
|

reset() eagerly rebuilt the ProxyManager singleton immediately,
capturing env vars before a caller could set them for the next
request. PHP's reset() just nulls the static instance; getInstance()
lazily constructs on next use. Match that so proxy env vars set after
reset() are observed.
get_instance() also ensured the singleton was constructed under its
own lock, dropped that lock, and returned the bare Mutex; every caller
then took a second, independent lock. A reset() landing in that gap
would leave the caller observing None and panicking on
.as_ref().unwrap(), a state the old eager-reconstructing reset() could
not produce. Return the already-locked MutexGuard from get_instance()
instead, so construction and use happen under one lock, and update all
call sites accordingly.
Holding that guard across a loop body then deadlocked in
diagnose_command, since check_http_proxy transitively re-enters
get_instance() via HttpDownloader -> CurlDownloader, and
std::sync::Mutex is not reentrant. Re-acquire the lock fresh each
iteration with a short-lived guard instead.
Finally, Mutex::new is a const fn, so the OnceLock wrapper around it
was unnecessary indirection; a bare static Mutex<Option<ProxyManager>>
initializes to the same state without the get_or_init/get dance.

Extends no_banned_use to cover std::any::Any, std::io::Read/Write, and
std::process::Command, and teaches the linter to allow `as _` imports
so trait methods can still be brought into scope without binding the
banned name. Fully qualifies all existing usages across the codebase.

The CurlDownloader owned a tokio runtime and block_on'd reqwest from its
sync tick(), while the repository/installer/downloader sync bridges each
created another Runtime and block_on'd async fns that reach that leaf.
Driving one Runtime::block_on from within another panics with "Cannot
start a runtime from within a runtime", hit by `require` when fetching
p2 metadata.
Switch CurlDownloader to a blocking reqwest client (its own internal
thread, never nested) and replace the per-call Runtime::new().block_on
bridges with a no-reactor sync_executor::block_on helper. No awaited
future parks on a reactor once the only async I/O is blocking, so the
helper can be nested freely.

- RequestProxy::supports_secure_proxy: always true (reqwest+rustls can always

Empirically verified: reqwest sends no default User-Agent (shirabe sets it
explicitly) and accepts https:// proxy URLs. init+install output stays
byte-identical to Composer.

the .ken sketch, resolving the construction panic that blocked command tests
(mock path via __new_mock is untouched). Port remote_filesystem (7), hg/svn
driver (4), zip_archiver/git_exclude_filter (4) tests. Fix hg/svn/git_exclude
regex-delimiter and svn result-propagation porting bugs.

Port git, version_guesser, gitlab_driver, github_driver, and git_downloader
tests using the ProcessExecutor/HttpDownloader mocks and IO/Config stubs.
Fix production regex-porting bugs surfaced by the now-reachable paths:
Url::sanitize and Response::find_header_value had non-delimited PCRE patterns;
implement array_search_mixed non-strict branch and a datetime format mapping.
Add HttpDownloader::__new_mock so mocked downloaders skip curl construction.

Redesign PhpResource into a real stream handle (File/Memory backing with
tracked position, eof, closed state) and unify the whole fopen family
(fopen/fwrite/fread/fgets/fgetc/feof/fclose/ftell/fseek/rewind/fstat/
ftruncate/fflush and stream_get_contents/stream_copy_to_stream) on
&PhpResource, replacing the split PhpMixed/PhpResource APIs and their
todo!() stubs. fopen now returns Result; read functions stay String for
now (TODO(phase-e) to move to byte strings).
Propagate the signatures through callers: Process stdout/stderr, Cursor
input, curl header/body handles (extracted into typed maps keyed by job
id), Filesystem copy/safe_copy/files_are_equal, BufferIO, error_handler,
platform, perforce, zip. The proc_open pipe paths cannot carry a
PhpResource in a PhpMixed list, so they are left as todo!() with notes.

PHP wraps fopen/file_get_contents/file_put_contents in set_error_handler
to capture warning text into error_message. Rust reports I/O failures
through return values rather than warnings, so this side channel cannot
work; replace the calls with TODO(phase-c) notes and leave error_message
empty until the I/O layer surfaces a reason. Also remove the now-unused
set_error_handler_closure shim and make set_error_handler a no-op.

Convert every sprintf() call with a compile-time literal format string to
format!, implementing Display for PhpMixed (delegating to php_to_string) so
PhpMixed values render with PHP string semantics through {}. Also merge the
format!-wrapped and conditional-literal dynamic sites into single format!
calls. Genuinely runtime format strings (table styles, configurable error
messages, command synopsis, progress-bar modifiers, regex-built messages)
still go through sprintf.

Wire up ConsoleIO with HelperSet/QuestionHelper, register the
ErrorHandler with the IO instance, and fall back to a default output
in run(). Replace resolved phase-b TODOs across the console, command,
io, factory, installer, dependency_resolver, and util modules; reclassify
the remaining blockers (typed Symfony command registry, stdin resource
caching) as phase-c.

Replace TODO(phase-b) placeholders (todo!() and commented-out code)
with real implementations:
- Share JsonFile via Rc<RefCell<JsonFile>> so JsonConfigSource and the
owning command can hold the same instance (base_config_command,
config_command, repository_command, require_command, create_project,
remove_command, factory)
- Change InstallerInterface methods (is_installed, download, prepare,
cleanup, get_install_path) to &mut self so initialize_vendor_dir can
run, propagated to all installer implementations
- Pass io/config/filesystem/process by clone instead of moving or
stubbing (auth_helper, svn_driver, curl_downloader, library_installer)
- Make TransportException Clone and store it by value in VcsRepository
- Clone operations in Transaction sort, root_aliases/temporary_constraints
in RepositorySet::create_pool, and share CompletePackage via handle in
PlatformRepository
- Wire up set_option, set_requires/set_dev_requires, installation manager
setters, BumpCommand::set_composer, and clean_backups/set_local_phar
