The assoc flag was always a literal at every call site, so the boolean
carried no information the function name could not. json_decode_assoc
and json_decode_obj make the resulting PhpMixed shape visible at the
call site.

fstat and lstat now return Option<FileStat> instead of a PhpMixed array, so
Platform::is_tty and Filesystem::is_junction read `mode` as a field. The
array carried each of the 13 values twice — once under its numeric index and
once under its name — which no caller relied on, and building it spelled the
field list out four times.

posix_getpwuid now returns Option<PasswdEntry> instead of a PhpMixed array,
so Platform reads the field it wants rather than digging through the map.
posix_getuid and posix_geteuid return u32, matching the uid PasswdEntry is
looked up by.

parse_url now returns Option<UrlComponents> instead of a PhpMixed array,
and the component-selecting overload with the PHP_URL_* constants is gone:
callers read the field they want. Two call sites change behaviour as a
result, both towards PHP:
* CurlDownloader::handle_redirect tested scheme and host with is_null(), so
an unparsable Location header (PhpMixed::Bool(false)) counted as an
absolute URL. PHP's truthiness test sends it to the relative-path branch.
* Url::get_origin appended a literal port 0, which PHP treats as falsy and
leaves off.

Porting mapped every PHP `protected` member onto `pub(crate)`, which is
wider than nearly all of them need. Each item demoted here is reached
only from the module that defines it, so the crate-wide visibility
conveyed nothing.
Every `pub(crate)` that survives has at least one reader in another
module of the same crate.

Split date() into date_utc() and date_local(), the latter resolving the
system's local timezone through the tzfile crate ($TZ, then
/etc/localtime, falling back to UTC when neither is readable). The
timestamps Composer renders for humans -- the GitHub OAuth token note,
the GitHub API rate limit reset time, the Perforce client spec fields and
the "today" check of the show command -- now go through date_local().
PHP resolves its default timezone from the date.timezone ini setting,
which Shirabe does not read, so date_default_timezone_get/set have no
input left to model and are dropped from the shim and its callers. The
resulting difference is recorded in docs/known-incompatibilities.md.

PhpDirHandle recorded the opened path and nothing else, and its only
caller asked just whether the open had succeeded. A resource type that
has to gain readdir and closedir before it means anything is worse than
the std::fs::read_dir call it wraps, so Filesystem::isReadable now makes
that call directly.

The binary called itself Composer everywhere: the application name, the
logo, --version, about, and every warning that talks about the running
program. Prompts to file a bug also pointed at Composer's issue tracker.
Add SHIRABE_VERSION and SHIRABE_RELEASE_DATE next to the Composer version
constants and report those, naming the Composer version this port tracks
alongside them. Composer::VERSION and getVersion() are untouched, so the
composer platform package, composer-runtime-api and the HTTP User-Agent
keep the value plugins and package repositories expect.
build.rs stamps the release date with the UTC date of the HEAD commit,
the way Composer's Compiler fills in @release_date@ when building the
phar. It now also fails the build when git cannot be read, instead of
letting COMPOSER_DEV_WARNING_TIME fall back to the tagged-release value
and suppress the outdated-build warning forever.
Messages about the Composer ecosystem keep their wording. Two of them are
pinned by upstream installer fixtures (Rule's "cannot be modified by
Composer" and SolverProblemsException's "you can run Composer with") and
stay as they are so those fixtures can keep being used verbatim.
The e2e list comparison against upstream Composer now skips the banner,
which cannot match by design, and compares everything below it as before.

The shim reported a fixed PHP 8.1.0 through PHP_VERSION, PHP_VERSION_ID,
the major/minor/release triple and the PHP_WINDOWS_VERSION_* trio. Their
uses split in two.
Some guarded branches PHP only needs on runtimes this port cannot be:
proc_get_status reports the exit status on every call, so Symfony's
pre-8.3 exit-code cache has nothing to work around; hash_raw and
hash_file always offer xxh3, so the sha1 fallback is unreachable; and
http_get_last_response_headers is always available, so the pre-8.4
$http_response_header branch is gone. safeJunctions reads the host
Windows version rather than PHP state, and joins the Windows work on
hold.
The rest ask about the PHP the user actually runs, and now reach the
worker through a new php-rpc PhpVersion payload: the startup banner and
the 7.2.5 warning, self-update's min-php filter, the ext-*
recommendation in VersionSelector, the stream User-Agent, and whether
PhpFileParser scans for enums.

`http_build_query` ignores `numeric_prefix` because a string-keyed slice never
holds an integer key, and every caller passes `"&"` as the separator. Drop both
parameters and hard-code the separator.
Callers that pass a map of scalar literals to `http_build_query_mixed` no longer
need to build an `IndexMap<String, PhpMixed>` for it, so move them to the slice
form.

The constant was None and defined("HHVM_VERSION") reports it undefined, so
every branch guarded by it was dead: shirabe is a Rust binary and never runs
on HHVM. HhvmDetector keeps probing for an `hhvm` binary in PATH, which is
what actually produces the hhvm platform package.
Two of the dropped branches ask about the PHP runtime that consumes the
result rather than about shirabe itself -- the class loader's Hack file
lookup and the class map parser's enum scanning -- so both get a
TODO(php-runtime) marker.

str_contains(), str_starts_with() and str_ends_with() were thin wrappers
over the str methods of the same semantics. Call sites now use
contains()/starts_with()/ends_with() directly.

The SignalHandler port was a no-op stub, so all four of Composer's abort
paths were dead code: nothing removed a half-created project, reverted
composer.json, or cleaned up half-installed packages.
Composer runs those handlers from pcntl callbacks, which a Rust signal
handler cannot do -- it may touch nothing beyond atomics. SignalSubscription
records the signal instead, and the abort runs from checkpoints on the normal
call stack, where the clean-up can borrow the state it needs. That also
resolves the closure-capture TODO(phase-c)s in RequireCommand and
InstallationManager, and replaces exit_with_last_signal's exit(0) with the
restore-and-re-raise Seld\Signal does.
A subscription is live only inside the four abort regions, so elsewhere the
signals keep their default disposition and kill the process at once. It is
installed without SA_RESTART so a signal interrupts an interactive prompt
rather than resuming the read. A signal reaches only the innermost
subscription, reproducing SignalHandler's single-stack dispatch.
Drop SignalRegistry, SignalableCommandInterface and the Application wiring
for them: nothing in Composer reaches that path, and SignalHandler discards
whatever they register. Signal handling from plugins and scripts is
undefined behavior; see docs/dev/signals.md.

Composer's Composer\Util\TlsHelper is marked deprecated for removal in
Composer 3.0 and has no caller in composer/composer outside its own
test: PHP's stream layer verifies certificate hostnames itself, and the
one surviving method delegates to composer/ca-bundle.
The Rust port had no caller either, so it, its test, and the
openssl_x509_parse shim it was the sole user of are removed.

Composer restarts itself with Xdebug unloaded because Xdebug makes PHP
several times slower. Xdebug is never loaded into this process, so what
needs dealing with is the PHP worker: it is spawned with
`-d xdebug.mode=off` and `XDEBUG_MODE=off` (Xdebug reads the environment
variable first and lets it override every ini setting), which makes its
module init return before it installs any executor, compile, error or
opcode hook.
Rewriting the ini files and re-executing, the way xdebug-handler does,
would additionally cover Xdebug 2, which hooks unconditionally and has no
equivalent setting. That is not worth its machinery here: Xdebug 2 caps
out at PHP 7.4, while every PHP version Composer supports can run
Xdebug 3.
What remains of XdebugHandler is small enough to live beside the worker
it governs, so its crate is gone and its callers inline it. isXdebugActive
answers false without asking PHP whenever the worker is switched off, so a
command that needs no PHP does not spawn one just for the Xdebug warning;
diagnose reports what the worker measures instead, which still surfaces an
Xdebug that ignores the setting. PlatformRepository has no unloaded
extension to restore, since switching the mode off leaves it loaded.
COMPOSER_ORIGINAL_INIS is neither written nor read: it exists so a
restarted process can name the ini files it replaced, and IniHelper can
report the worker's own. IniHelperTest injects through that variable, so
none of its cases are ported.

doRemove() renames a directory to a random hidden name before emptying
it, and undoes that rename when the final rmdir fails, so a concurrent
process cannot recreate the path mid-removal. It also walks one level at
a time through FilesystemIterator instead of flattening the whole tree,
and lets an inner rmdir failure pass, both as upstream does.
copy() keeps the mode fopen($targetFile, 'w') would have left rather
than the origin's, symlink() and mirror() call readlink() and
getLinkTarget() where upstream does, and a directory iterator that
cannot be opened propagates its UnexpectedValueException instead of
being swallowed or flattened into an IOException.
Error message text is out of scope per docs/known-incompatibilities.md,
so the three TODO(phase-c) markers that only tracked wording are gone,
along with linkException()'s Windows-only branch. So are the arguments
no caller varies -- symlink()'s copyOnWindows, mirror()'s iterator and
options, copy()'s overwriteNewerFiles -- which removes the last
TODO(phase-c) in the file.
New shim functions: readlink, filesystem_iterator, stream_is_local,
strrev and SplFileInfo::getLinkTarget. base64_encode takes bytes so
random_bytes() can feed it.

The shim raises no PHP-level errors, so error_get_last() always returned
None and every message built from it lost its trailing reason. Now that
the fs mutators and php_strip_whitespace carry an io::Error, take the
reason from the call that actually failed instead of a global last-error
slot.
Filesystem::unlinkImplementation returns that error rather than a bool so
ensureDirectoryExists, unlink and rmdir can report it, and PhpFileParser
appends it to the "following message may be helpful" hint. The wording
is Rust's io::Error text, not PHP's warning text, for the same reason
noted in symfony/filesystem.

mkdir, rmdir, unlink and symlink each had a bool version and a _result
twin returning the io::Error, which left two names for one call. Keep
only the Result form and let the callers that want a boolean spell out
.is_ok(). Call sites that discard the outcome, as their PHP originals
do, are unchanged.

The shim's DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR was hardcoded to "/", so every ported
`'\\' === DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR` check compared against a constant that
does not track the target platform. std::path::MAIN_SEPARATOR and
MAIN_SEPARATOR_STR carry the same meaning as PHP's constant and resolve
per platform, so the Windows branches are selected on Windows targets.

Composer hands the exception it caught to the one it throws in its place,
so `getPrevious()` reaches the cause and Application's renderer prints the
whole chain. Every ported site dropped it, because the flat exception
structs had nowhere to put one. `AnyThrowable::into_previous` turns the
caught error into that argument, and the 13 sites now pass it.
`getCode()` came along for the ride at the four sites that derive the new
exception's code from the caught one (PharArchiver, ArrayLoader x2), and
ComposerRepository's message now names the caught exception's class
instead of the literal "Exception".
GitHubDriver::attemptCloneFallback took the previous exception's message
and appended it to its own, which no `\RuntimeException('Fallback to git
driver disabled')` in Composer ever says; it now chains it instead.
Git::syncMirror restores what PHP's `finally` does to an exception in
flight: the `git remote set-url` that scrubs credentials back out of the
URL runs in a `finally`, and when it fails PHP propagates *its* exception
over the one already leaving, chaining the displaced one as previous. The
port discarded the finally's result, so a failure to scrub the URL was
reported as a successful mirror sync. `AnyThrowable::set_previous`
models the engine-level chaining.

Ported exceptions were flat structs reached with `downcast_ref`, so
Composer's `catch (\RuntimeException $e)` only matched the exact leaf
type and `get_class($e)` had nothing to report. Each exception now
embeds an instance of the class it extends and travels inside an
`AnyThrowable`; `Catch::catch`/`catch_mut` walk that chain, and
`PhpClass::php_class_name` yields the PHP FQCN.
Dropping the `std::error::Error` impls from the exception types leaves
`AnyThrowable` as the only route into an `anyhow::Error`, so the walk
cannot be bypassed. A `no_exception_downcast` linter catches the
`downcast::<X>()` calls that would now silently answer `None`.
Three sites change behavior as a result: the `TransportException`
exit-code override reaches `MaxFileSizeExceededException`, the
`catch (\LogicException)` in findSimilar() reaches its subclasses, and
rendered exception titles carry the real class name rather than a
guess. `get_class_err()` is no longer a `todo!()`, which re-enables
FilesystemRepositoryTest::testCorruptedRepositoryFile.

PHP's version_compare takes its operator as a string, so the shim's port
did too, and Constraint carried two families of operator constants plus
translation tables to convert between the string form and its own int
codes. Five copies of those tables had accumulated across Constraint,
CompilingMatcher and the plugin value bridge.
version_compare now takes a CmpOp, which makes an invalid operator
unrepresentable and removes the tables' reason to exist. Constraint
stores a CmpOp and keeps only the string parsing its constructor needs;
getOperator, compile and CompilingMatcher::match speak CmpOp as well.
PHP's OP_* numbering stays observable: a plugin reads the raw integer off
the Constraint object over RPC, so get_operator_constant and its new
inverse hold that 0..5 mapping.

Replace the todo!() bodies with real ports. Four autoload-generator
tests now run for real; the rest stay #[ignore]d, but each ignore reason
now names the concrete missing symbol instead of a vague subsystem.
Production additions the ports need: the deprecated
AuthHelper::addAuthenticationHeader wrapper,
EventDispatcher::__set_dispatch_script_override as the seam for PHPUnit
onlyMethods(['dispatchScript']), and a define() stub in the shim.

Call sites whose haystack was an inline array of literals (or a local
built solely to feed one) had to wrap both sides in PhpMixed just to
compare, allocating a String per element on every call. matches! does
the same test against the underlying &str/i64/Option directly, so the
PhpMixed round trip and its .to_string()/.clone()/.iter().map()
conversions are gone.
Sites whose haystack is a runtime value or a named constant array are
left on in_array_strict: inlining a named constant would duplicate its
contents at the call site.

PHP hands back a positional array, so every caller had to reach into a
PhpMixed list by index and fall back to a default when an element was
missing or the wrong variant -- fallbacks that could never fire, since
the list shape is fixed. LicenseMetadata names the four elements and
makes the accesses total.
This also drops the crate's last use of PhpMixed, and with it the
dependency on shirabe-php-shim.

The ported docblocks copied @param and @return straight from the PHP
source. When such a tag carries nothing but a type and an argument name,
the Rust signature already states it, so the line is noise. Tags whose
text adds prose beyond the type are kept.

The shim's filesystem entry points took `&str` even though each one resolves
to a local path through `std::fs` or a syscall, so callers holding a `PathBuf`
had to stringify it at the call site. They now take `impl AsRef<Path>`, the
form `file_exists`, `is_dir`, `unlink` and the rest of the already-converted
set use.
`Phar`, `PharData` and `ZipArchive` keep their archive path as a `PathBuf`.
`PharData::compress` names the compressed sibling by appending the suffix to
the file name rather than formatting the path into a `String`.
Arguments PHP resolves through a stream wrapper (`fopen`, `file_put_contents`,
`include`) still take `&str`, as do the byte-string operations (`dirname`,
`basename`, `pathinfo`) and archive-internal entry names, which are `/`-joined
logical names rather than OS paths.

Three fixes for the ComposerRepository/FilesystemRepository/PlatformRepository
hazards where inner-composition delegation skipped PHP's late-bound virtual
dispatch:
- ComposerRepository::has_package now builds its packageMap through the
late-bound getPackages() equivalent, so lazy-providers repos surface the
LogicException and available-packages repos load their package list, as in
PHP, instead of silently answering false from the raw array.
- RepositoryInterface::get_repo_name returns anyhow::Result<String>: PHP's
getRepoName() counts through the late-bound initialize(), which is fallible
in file-reading subclasses. FilesystemRepository and PackageRepository now
run that initialization instead of freezing the inner array repository to an
empty state (which also made a later write() truncate installed.json).
Supporting changes keep the initialization chain callable from &self:
JsonFile::read takes &self (indent moved into a RefCell), FilesystemRepository
dev_mode became a Cell, and WritableArrayRepository dev_package_names a
RefCell.
- PlatformRepository::new routes constructor packages through its own
add_package so the override handling and full platform initialization run
as they do via PHP's parent constructor; the inner find_package/add_package
delegations inside add_package (and ComposerRepository::add_package) gained
the same is_initialized guard, since the constructor path would otherwise
freeze the repository.

IOInterface::ask/select now return anyhow::Result<PhpMixed>, and
ConsoleIO::ask_question forwards QuestionHelper errors (validator
failures, MissingInputException) instead of collapsing them with
.expect(). In PHP these exceptions propagate from QuestionHelper
through ConsoleIO to the caller, so callers such as UpdateCommand's
interactive package selection must be able to observe them; the
MissingInputException is wrapped with its concrete type preserved so
Application's ExceptionInterface downcast keeps working. All call
sites now propagate with `?` (Perforce::query_p4_user becomes
Result-returning: PHP declares it void but exceptions still escape),
and the previously ignored
test_interactive_mode_throws_if_no_package_entered passes.
ask_confirmation/ask_and_hide_answer still collapse errors; extending
propagation to them is left as TODO(phase-c) pending a decision.

The only callers were trivial fixed-format uses: reading the first
four hash bytes as a native int, splitting in_addr byte strings, and
building a constant ZIP EOCD record. Each site now does the byte
manipulation directly, so the general-purpose shims are no longer
needed.

Adopt the tar, flate2, and bzip2 crates to fill in the phar.rs and
compress.rs todos: PharData tar/zip reading, building, and whole-archive
compression, plus a native .phar reader that follows the php.net
file-format manual and verifies hash-based signatures. Callers now
propagate the constructor/extract errors PHP throws, and fwrite accepts
byte strings so gzread no longer needs lossy UTF-8.
The native .phar writing API stays todo!() (no call sites; Composer's
Compiler is not ported) and OPENSSL phar signatures are accepted
unverified (TODO(phase-c)).
This unblocks Tar::getComposerJson and the tar/phar/gzip downloaders;
tar_test (7), artifact_repository_test (2), and phar_archiver_test zip
(1) are un-ignored. The archive command itself still panics because
ArchiveManager::archive always generates glob excludes whose look-ahead
regexes the regex crate cannot compile; converting those patterns to
regex-compatible ones is a separate, still-undecided work item.

Two shim gaps made the extension-related branches of solver-problem
messages wrong:
- phpversion($ext) with a non-empty extension can't be known statically
(it's shirabe-php-shim's todo!()); Problem::get_missing_package_reason
now calls shirabe_php_rpc::phpversion, the same RPC bridge
platform::runtime::Runtime::get_extension_version already uses.
- extension_loaded's hardcoded allowlist was missing "pcre", a mandatory
always-compiled-in PHP extension, so ext-pcre was misreported as
"missing from your system" instead of "disabled by your platform
config" whenever a platform override disabled it.
Also fix XdebugHandler::getAllIniFiles() always returning `[""]`
(a php-runtime stub): create_extension_hint()'s early-return guard
(`paths[0] empty && len==1`) fired unconditionally, silently dropping
the entire "To enable extensions..." hint from every solver-problem
message that mentions missing extensions. shirabe-external-packages
can't depend on shirabe-php-rpc (shirabe-php-rpc already depends on
shirabe-external-packages), so IniHelper::get_all() queries a new
get_all_ini_files RPC command directly instead of going through the
stub.
This exposed that XdebugHandler is never constructed with a name
because bin/composer's restart-without-Xdebug bootstrap was never
ported to main.rs, making COMPOSER_ORIGINAL_INIS-driven behavior
unreachable; documented with a TODO(phase-c) and updated
ini_helper_test.rs's ignore reasons (and ignored test_with_no_ini,
which only passed before by coincidence with the old stub's constant
output) to match.

A plugin can reach ProcessExecutor::executeAsync() through the
rust-proxy stub, which resolves with a real Symfony Process instance
that can't be reconstructed on the Rust side (its state is tied to
whichever process calls proc_open(), and it refuses serialization).
Add execute_async_php() as a todo!() stub, documented as a dual-
instantiation split in plugin-class-classification.md: Rust-internal
callers keep using execute_async(), while the plugin path must forward
spawning to the PHP child once the RPC channel exists.

shirabe_php_shim::chr() returned a Rust String, which lossily
re-encodes bytes >= 0x80 as UTF-8 replacement characters. ip_get_mask,
ip_get_network, and ip_map_to_6 relied on chr() to build raw in_addr
and netmask byte arrays, corrupting IPv4-in-IPv6 mappings and CIDR
netmasks. Build the Vec<u8> byte arrays directly instead of
round-tripping through String, and un-ignore test_ip_address and
test_ip_range now that the underlying bug is fixed.
chr()'s only other caller (http_downloader.rs, an ASCII ESC byte in a
regex pattern) didn't need the indirection either, so remove the shim
function entirely.

Several call sites coerced PhpMixed to bool via `.as_bool()` (which
only matches a literal Bool variant) where the corresponding PHP code
does a plain `(bool)` cast or truthy check (isset()/array_key_exists()
+ implicit bool conversion). This silently dropped truthy non-bool
values (e.g. String("true"), String("1"), Int(1)) to their unwrap_or
default instead of PHP's actual truthy result. Switched these sites to
PhpMixed::to_bool(), which implements PHP's full truthy-cast rules.
